I remember it well. I had rehearsed all my lines ‘Do you have any rooms free?’, ‘My wife is heavily pregnant, have you anywhere we could stay?’. I was donning a tea towel and my mum had rendered the most convincing beard ever seen on the face of a nine-year old. I perhaps wasn’t ready for the ensuing fame but like all great actors I knew I’d eventually find my way; the role was mine for the taking.
After all the auditions were completed I was called back into the school hall where Mrs Richardson was informing the successful students one at a time. The walk to the front of the hall was long but proud. But then, without warning, everything came crashing down. ‘Thank you for auditioning, I thought you we very good. I think your skills might be better suited to the ‘integral’ role of a sheep!’ I was crushed. ‘And do ask your mum how she did your beard’. The audacity.
It’s taken years to recover from my shock disappointment but this Sunday I was finally given the opportunity to play my starring role. Oasis Church Waterloo hosted the ‘Nativity from Scratch’ where we were invited to come as whichever character we chose. The heavily pregnant Louise and husband Nathan Jones played an almost too convincing Mary and Joseph, we had dozens of wise men and shepherds and I, at last, was a star.
